Located in Saint-Emilion, Château Bellefont-Belcier's history dates back at least as far as the 17th century, and has been closely linked with that of powerful Bordeaux families. Count Louis François de Belcier was responsible for planting the first vines in the late 18th century. The present owners are Jacques Berrebi, Alain Laguillaume and Dominique Hébrard.
In order to qualify for grand cru classé status, the vineyard at Bellefont-Belcier was restructured and the winery renovated in 1994. The 20 hectares of vines, including 13 in a single block, have fine south-facing sun exposure. The vineyard consists of three plots located between Pavie and Larcis-Ducasse on Saint-Emilion's southern slope, and the soil is mainly clay-limestone. The average age of the vines is 30 years and the grape varieties are 70% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Cabernet Franc.
Bellefont-Belcier makes fairly strong wine that is somewhat oaky and spicy, with a fine texture. The average yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare.
