Built in the mid-18th century, Beychevelle is a truly elegant Château, surrounded by magnificent flower beds. It never ceases to impress visitors to Bordeaux. Beychevelle owes its name to ships on the Gironde that used to lower their sails (baisse-voile in French) when passing in front of the estate in honor of the owner, the Duke of Epernon, Grand Admiral of France.
The château has a unique Gunzian gravel subsoil with good drainage thanks to a network of small ditches.
The estate's vineyard has the characteristic to be split for 71 hectares on the Saint-Julien AOC and for 13 hectares on the Haut-Medoc AOC growing region.
Château Beychevelle's first class terroir has led to certain memorable successes (1949, 1970, 1982, 1986, 1989, and 1990).
Today, this 4th growth is again on a positive trand and recent vintages have given an indication of what Beychevelle should be able to produce on a regular basis.
Beychevelle, Amiral de Beychevelle (second wine), Les Brulieres de Beychevelle (Haut-Medoc)
