Totalling 94 hectares, Château Chantegrive is one of the largest estates in the Graves thanks to a series of acquisitions made by Henri Lévêque over the past 40 years.
Consisting of sand and gravel soil on a clay-limestone subsoil, the vineyard is almost equally divided between red and white grapes.
Long famous for its excellent dry white wine, the estate also produces the "Cuvée Caroline" made exclusively from 35 year old vines. This is richer and more complex than the regular cuvée.
This wine is cold treated to retain freshness and fermentated in new oak barrels. It is then aged on its lees and bâtonné (stirred with a stick) every 10 days for 9 months. Chantegrive's red wine is made the traditional way.
Chantegrive's red wine reached a watershed with the 1999 vintage, becoming more ripe and concentrated. Château Chantegrive are very good value for money.
As for white wine, in addition to their regular cuvée, Château Chantegrive produce 50,000 bottles of an excellent reserve dry white called Cuvée Caroline, which can age for ten years and more.
Château Chantegrive also makes a good sweet white wine from the neighboring Cérons appellation under the Chantegrive name.
