The first recorded mention of Citran dates back to the 13th century. The 90 hectare vineyard surrounding this beautiful medieval estate has an oustanding gravel terroir.
The owners modernized the vat room and cellar in the late 80s.
Working closely with the Rolland enology laboratory, special attention is paid to picking and sorting the grapes as well as aging the wine.
Château Citran's powerful, classic style (although slightly rustic in the late 80s) has now become more refined, probably thanks to its higher proportion of Merlot, while staying true to its Médocain roots.
Major efforts undertaken by Jean-Michel Fernandez in the early 90s resulted in improved quality and an enhanced reputation.
The Taillan group acquired the estate in 1996. They continued to maintain high standards by producing character wines which very much deserves the praise it received from critics.
After a slight downturn of Château Citran at the turn of the century, the wine improved once again in recent years.
The better vintages are good value for money.
