Records of winegrowing at Château Climens date back to the 16th century. Since then, and until 1971 when the estate was bought by the Lurton family, Climens had just 4 owners.
The 30 hectare vineyard, located in a single block around an 18th century manor house, is planted with 100% Sémillon vines.
Climens' remarkable terroir consists of flat, smooth pebbles on a thin layer of clay, sand, and iron oxide soil covering an asteriated limestone substrate.
The wine is fermented in barrel, which means that small lots can be handled separately in order to fine tune the final blend 24 months later.
Château Climens did not market any of their grand vin in 1984, 1987, 1992, or 1993. Many wine lovers consider Climens the most elegant Sauternes. Sometimes slightly reserved when young, it becomes concentrated and delicious after 10 years. Some recent tastings show that great vintages of Climens from the 20s (1921 and 1929) remain magical.
After a slight decline in the early 90s, Climens regained its position as one of the best sweet white wines of the Gironde from 1996 onwards.
The estate's successful years are clearly legendary.
