Château La Croix de Gay is located in Pomerol, not far from Pétrus and L'Evangile. La Fleur de Gay is the prestige cuvée of Château la Croix de Gay.
La Croix de Gay belongs to Alain Raynaud and Chantal Lebreton, who took over the estate after their father, Noël Raynaud, who died in 1997. Chantal Lebreton presently manages this tiny estate, taking advantage of precious advice from the famous enologist Michel Rolland regarding both the vineyard and the cellar.
La Croix de Gay has 12 hectares of vines in several plots, mostly on the upper Pomerol plateau. The terroir is a mixture of gravel, clay, and sand. The grape varieties are as follows: 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
La Fleur de Gay comes from a plot of less than 3 hectares of old vines belonging to Château La Croix de Gay that has been vinified separately since 1982. This plot, planted with 100% Merlot, has a clay and gravel soil with some sand, and a density of 6,000 vines/hectare.
The wine is powerful, rich, well-structured, oaky, tannic, and silky. It takes many years to reveal its full potential.
Annual production is about 15,000 bottles. La Fleur de Gay's complex bouquet and rich, powerful, and unctuous texture make it much sought after by consumers who love Pomerol. La Fleur de Gay needs to age for 5-10 years to reach its peak.
