Château Champ des Treilles is located in the commune of Margueron, in the canton of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande in the Libourne region. Owned by Jean-Michel Comme (manager of Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac) and his wife, Corinne, this estate is the culmination of the life's work of Jean-Michel's grandparents. His family arrived from Italy in the 1920s. Champ des Treilles has been run by Corinne Comme since 1998. The soil is a combination of clay-limestone and flint. However, Corinne Comme believes that the notion of terroir cannot be reduced to just a question of soil composition. What counts is the way it is expressed in the wine, which cannot be quantified. In order to make the most of the terroir at Champ des Treilles, vine density was doubled, from 5,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare – a number typically found in the great growths of the Médoc. Also reminiscent of the Médoc, the estate recently planted Petit Verdot on a plot with shallow clay-limestone soil. In another unusual move, Muscadelle, a white wine variety that is difficult to grow, but which produces magnificent wines, was top-grafted onto existing vines. All the various varieties are pruned using the Guyot simple or double method.
Château Champ des Treilles produces fruity, full-bodied, powerful wines with a tightly-knit tannic texture and a long, expressive aftertaste. Jean Michel and Corinne Comme produce uncompromising wines, eschewing a simplistic, overdone style denatured by excess oak. Champ des Treilles is classic, and often requires several years to show its full potential.
