Located approximately 6 km from Saint-Emilion, Château Faugères is a vast estate that overlaps both the Saint-Emilion (49 hectares) and Côtes de Castillon (31 hectares) appellations. Faugères has a clay-limestone subsoil.
Numerous changes have been made at the estate between 1997 and 2005 under the management of Corinne Guisez: a new vat room with truncated cone-shaped vats was built, a new drainage system was put into the vineyard, the use of gravity technology and the reduction in yields were implemented.
Silvio Denz from Switzerland acquired the estate in 2005. He already introduced some considerable innovations such as the purchase of new plots and the construction of a new winery designed by world-famous Swiss architect Mario Botta.
Winemaking is carried out meticulously and includes such modern techniques as cold pre-fermentation maceration and blend optimization. Stephan von Neipperg, the owner of La Mondotte and Château Canon la Gaffelière, and Michel Rolland are the consulting oenologists.
Château Faugères is generally well-structured, with good aging potential. The estate also produces an excellent cuvee prestige named Péby Faugères made from the grapes grown on the best plots (9 hectares), as well as Château Cap de Faugères from the Côtes de Castillon, which is lighter than Faugères. Since 2004, the property produces a second wine called Haut Faugères.
Since the early 90s, Château Faugères has made huge efforts to improve its winemaking facilities and vineyard management.
In general, Château Faugères is considered as part of the good wineries of Saint-Emilion.
Lovers for concentrated wines tend to turn towards Péby-Faugères, the 100% Merlot cuvée, which is made from the best plots and 40 years vines.
