Created in the mid 17th century by Romain de Filhot, the estate passed into the de Lur Saluces family through marriage.
They sold the wine, which also included the Domaine de Pineau, under the name "Château Sauternes".
Filhot stayed in the family for generations, until the 300 hectare estate (20% planted with vines) came into the hands of current owners, the Count de Vaucelles family.
Filhot's soil consists of gravel on limestone bedrock. Winemaking is done in the traditional way.
In good years, Château Filhot makes wines with tropical and citrus fruit aromas, as well as a fairly complex texture, which are best enjoyed after 10 years.
Although Château Filhot has made plenty of efforts to improve quality, the estate is at times unfairly criticized due to a certain hard and unyielding side when young. In recent years, Filhot is close to the quality of other Sauternes châteaux.
With regard to older vintages, 1990 Filhot is very beautiful, and the "Crème de Tête" from that same year is very delicious, but unfortunately rather rare.
Filhot, Pineau du Rey
