STUDIES ON BORDEAUX WINES AND GROWTHS

Chateau Fombrauge

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Grand Cru

last update : Tuesday 09 February 2010

Winemaking at Fombrauge dates back to the 15th century.
The vineyards are in a superb location, on the Côte de Saint-Emilion facing due south.
The soil is largely chalky on limestone bedrock.
The estate was owned by Danish shippers between 1987 and 1999, which explains why Fombrauge is still very popular in Scandanavia.
Since 1999, Château Fombrauge has belonged to Bernard Magrez, who has taken it in a new direction by reducing yields and optimizing ripeness.
The estate's wines are generally round and fruity. Produced from a 1.5 hectare plot of old vines with very concentrated grapes, a new cuvee called Magrez-Fombrauge is rich and suave, sharing certain characteristics with so-called "garage wines".

TASTING NOTES

Alain Bringolf - 04/2007

Bright ruby-red color.
Bizarre bouquet of spice, and bell pepper.
Fruity, with average concentration on the palate, but unbalanced with unpleasant, sour, bitter tannin. Thins out on the middle palate and drops off on the finish.
Disappointing.
