Winemaking at Fombrauge dates back to the 15th century.
The vineyards are in a superb location, on the Côte de Saint-Emilion facing due south. The soil is largely chalky on limestone bedrock.
The estate was owned by Danish shippers between 1987 and 1999, which explains why Fombrauge is still very popular in Scandanavia.
Since 1999, Château Fombrauge has belonged to Bernard Magrez, who has taken it in a new direction by reducing yields and optimizing ripeness.
The estate's wines are generally round and fruity. Produced from a 1.5 hectare plot of old vines with very concentrated grapes, a new cuvee called Magrez-Fombrauge is rich and suave, sharing certain characteristics with so-called "garage wines".
average for the Saint-Emilion appellation. Fombrauge produces pleasant wines which make an ideal accompaniment to any meal.
Once considered a more or less everyday wine, Fombrauge from the late 80s were not very interesting.
However, Château Fombrauge currently offers a good quality/price ratio.
