Château Fonplégade is located on the southern slopes of Saint-Emilion, where there are traces of winemaking going back to Roman times. The estate's most immediate neighbours are Châteaux Ausone, Belair, Canon, and Magdelaine.
In 1852, Jean-Pierre Beylot acquired this estate and went on to built winery buildings and a beautiful house there. Fonplégade has belonged to Denise and Stephen Adams since 2004.
The 18 hectares of vines grow in a single block in two different locations: half-way down the slope (on limestone and siliceous soil), as well as on the limestone plateau, which has great sun exposure and is protected from the wind. The average age of the vines is 30 years, and grape varieties consist of Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Franc (10%).
The average annual production at Fonplégade amounts to 25,000 bottles, with approximately 35,000 bottles of the second wine, Fleur de Fonplégade. Château Fonplégade is generally round, concentrated, rich, and strongly marked by Merlot.
