STUDIES ON BORDEAUX WINES AND GROWTHS

Chateau Fonroque

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Grand Cru Classé

last update : Sunday 27 November 2011

Château Fonroque is located on the western part of the Côte Cadet in the northern part of the of Saint-Emilion appellation.

Excellent sun exposure protects the vines - almost exclusively Merlot - from spring frost, and ensures healthy, ripe grapes.

Forroque has been owned by the Moueix family since 1930. Jean Moueix's grandson, Alain, now manages the estate after having been in charge of Château Mazeyres in Pomerol for eight years. Château Fonroque has a high quality clay-limestone terroir which produces rather classic, powerful, concentrated wines that are an ideal accompaniment to food, especially traditional French cuisine.

In the Bottle

The 2001 vintage is maybe the one that stands out most since Alain Moueix started managing the estate in 2000.

Steps have been taken to improve the quality of this grand cru classé, i.e. biodynamy, green cover, a plot-specific picking schedule, and temperature-controlled vats.

Thanks to the strong enthusiasm of Alain Moueix and his team and to Château Fonroque's excellent soil, these commendable efforts are paying off in the recent vintages.
