Classified a 3rd growth in 1885, Château Giscours' reputation had begun to fade by the time the estate was acquired by Nicolas Tari after WW II.
In 1995, Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma took over management, investing considerably in the estate. Eric Albada Jelgersma has totally renewed Giscour's winemaking team.
They work today in the continuity of several generations of wine growers who contributed to the fame of Château Giscours.
The vast 80 hectare vineyard is composed of gravelly rises on sandy subsoil. Differences observed in ripening encouraged the team at Giscours to pick the grapes plot-by-plot for optimum ripeness and to age the wines separately prior to the final blend.
Château Giscours is a round wine with elegant flavors and silky tannin.
Château Giscours was affected by several scandals in the 80s (the use of oak shavings in vats) and the beginning of the 90s (the blending of vintages and appellations with wines of lesser quality, and unlawful practices such as over chaptalization). These legal and financial imbroglios reflected extremely badly on Giscours and its wines were briefly abandoned by consumers.
Fortunately, Giscours is back on track and the improvements in quality since the beginning of the century are truly impressive!
Certain older vintages are still delicious (1975 and 1978), but the excellent 2000, 2001, and 2004, and especially the 2005 and 2006 Giscours, show what remarkable progress has been made.
On the basis of recent vintages, Giscours truly represents excellent value for money.
