Château Haut-Batailley is located in Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc.
Included as a fifth growth in the 1855 classification, Haut-Batailley was created when the Batailley estate was split into two parts in 1942. Haut-Batailley was acquired in 1978 by the aunt of François-Xavier Borie of Château Grand Puy Lacoste, the present owner. Until 2003, when the Borie estates were divided among various family members, Haut-Batailley was managed by the team from Château Ducru-Beaucaillou.
The 23 hectares of vines are in two separate parts. The first one is on the other side of the railway tracks, near the cellars. The second part, on the Plateau de Bages, has south-east facing sun exposure and a soil consisting mainly of Günz gravel on a layer of limestone.
Haut-Batailley has an elegant, delicate structure for a Pauillac, with a fresh, expressive bouquet. The wine has been increasingly well-balanced since 2004. The excellent 2005 Haut-Batailley is beautiful and has plenty of body. The past few vintages show that Château Haut-Batailley is rapidly attaining a level of quality in keeping with its great growth status.
