Château L’Evangile is located south-east of the Pomerol plateau, next to Château La Conseillante. It is bordered by Château Petrus to the north and only separated from Cheval Blanc (Saint-Emilion) by a small road.
Château L’Evangile appears on a 1741 land register under the name of Fazilleau. However, the estate as we know it today dates back to the Léglise family, who were instrumental in consolidating vineyard land in Pomerol in the 18th century. Domaines Barons de Rothschild acquired Château L'Evangile in 1990.
The state of the vineyard has much improved since 1998, when a partial replanting plan was introduced. The 16 hectares of vines grow on a sand, clay, and gravel soil. There is also crasse de fer (iron-rich hardpan) in the subsoil. The grape varieties consist of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%). The average age of the vines is 30 years.
Château L’Evangile produces about 5,000 cases a year, including the second wine. It is medium-strong and very fruity with a pure, unctuous texture.
Starting in 1997, the Domaines Barons de Rothschild have made a second wine, Le Blason de l’Evangile.
