Chateau la Clotte

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Grand Cru Classé

last update : Sunday 27 November 2011

Château La Clotte is a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé. The vineyard was part of a large estate belonging to the Grailly family in the 16th century.

Sylvain Chailleau acquired part of the estate called "la Clotte" (meaning "little cave" in Gascon dialect) from Marquis Archambault de Grailly in 1912. In 1931, Sylvain Chailleau handed over the château to his son Georges, who began selling the wine under the name La Clotte throughout France and Europe. When it came time to retire, he decided to lease La Clotte on a tenant-farming basis. His granddaughters Nelly Mouliérac, Dominique Tord, and Odile Plantade took over the estate in 1990, which was also the year that Nelly Mouliérac made her first vintage at La Clotte.

The 4-hectare estate has an outstanding terroir located just outside the ramparts of the medieval town of Saint-Emilion. Grape varieties consist of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

In the Bottle

Although Château La Clotte can be enjoyed young, it develops complexity with age.
