Located in the Sauternes appellation, the estate has 36 hectares of vines, 10 of which surround the château, with the rest scattered over three communes: Bommes, Fargues, and Sauternes. As might be expected with such diversity, each plot receives individual attention depending on whether the soil is predominately gravel or clay. Since 2005, grass is left to grow between the vine rows. This makes the vine roots sink deep into the soil and also enhances the soil life, which had been somewhat neglected for several years. Since 2009, the vineyard team has applied mechanical weed control beneath the vines. This altogether eliminates the need for chemical herbicides and is part of a move towards viticulture that respects the terroir and the environment.
Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey generally produces rich, deep, well-balanced wines. The quality is very reliable and perfectly representative of great Sauternes that can age for a long time. Among the benchmark years, the excellent 1983 and 1986 stand out, as well as the impressive 1988. In terms of more recent vintages, 1997, 2001, 2003, and 2008 Lafaurie-Peyraguey are among the finest wines in the entire appellation.
