In 1749, the Lynch family of Ireland acquired this estate through marriage. They sold it to the Jurine family in 1824. Château Lynch-Bages was bought by its current owners, the Cazes family, in 1934. Since 2006, Jean-Charles Cazes assumes overall responsibility for management of Château Lynch-Bages.
Located on a Günzian gravel rise covering a layer of clay soil, the vineyard consists of 5 separate plots with a total surface area of 90 hectares.
The winemaking facilities were completely renovated in the 1970s and the château's avant-garde computerized temperature control system for fermentation vats was considered a technological marvel at the time.
Old vines and low yields make Lynch-Bages one of the most worthy representatives of the Pauillac appellation. Marked by a high percentage of Cabernet-Sauvignon, Lynch-Bages makes powerful, full-bodied wines that are rather tannic in their youth, but round out beautifully with age.
The grapes are kept relatively briefly on the skins so as to extract enough tannin for 10-15 years aging.
The estate also produces a dry white wine, Blanc de Lynch-Bages, from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle vines. These grow on a 5 hectare plot located on the Bages plateau, on the outskirts of the city of Pauillac.
