Chateau Magdelaine

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

1er Grand Cru Classé B

last update : Sunday 04 December 2011

Château Magdelaine was classified a Premier Grand Cru Classé B in the most recent Saint-Émilion classification (2006).

Magdelaine belonged to the Chatonnet family for many years, who sold it to the firm of Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1952. The 10.5 hectare vineyard in a single block is located on the southern part of the Saint-Emilion slope, on the Saint-Martin clay-limestone plateau. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Grape varieties consist of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, and there are 6,000 vines/hectare, with an average yield of 40 hl/hectare.

In the Bottle

The average annual production is 36,000 bottles. There are also 24,000 bottles of a second wine, Les Songes de Magdelaine, made mostly from vines close to the Dordogne with alluvial and sandy soil.

Château Magdelaine is a rich, elegant, well-structured wine with fine tannin.

TASTING NOTES

Alain Bringolf - 02/2003

Relatively light colour with orange fringe on the edge... such an hue is quite surprising for a 8 years old wine.
Pretty nose - raspberry and black currant.
The mouth is horrible with an impression of alga (!) and greenish tannins. The wine's body is not very dense, relatively fluid and lacks concentration with the effect of exacerbated maturity on the fruit.
According to Nicolas Thienpont, this bottle is not representative of Jean-Claude Berrouet's style. What happened to this wine?
