Château Petit-Village is a famous estate located just outside the hamlet of Catusseau in the Pomerol appellation.
In fact, winegrowing was not widespread in Pomerol until the early 19th century, which is when wine was first produced at Château Petit-Village. The estate now belongs to AXA Millésimes.
Petit Village is located on the highest point of the gravelly plateau that forms the heart of the Pomerol appellation. The 11 hectares of vines are in a single block. The soil consists of deep gravel on clay-limestone with layers of iron-rich hardpan and iron pan. The grape varieties are 75% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Cabernet Franc. While Merlot predominates, parts of the vineyard with gravelly soil are conducive to an unusually large percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for the appellation. This gravelly soil means that Cabernet Sauvignon ripens earlier than at neighbouring estates.
The unique balance between Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc explains why Petit-Village isndifferent from other Pomerols. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine depth and structure conducive to long aging. Château Petit-Village has a complex bouquet of violet, forest floor and red fruit. It is long, delicate and tasty on the palate.
Since 1996, there has been a second wine, Le Jardin de Petit-Village. This wine is well-balanced, round, and elegant.
