Château Rouget is located just a few hundred meters from the church in Pomerol, right next to Château L'Eglise-Clinet, between the plateau and a stream called the Barbanne.
The name Rouget is a deformation of "Rougier", a part of Pomerol that once encompassed the Gay, Perruchot, La Veyète, and Lavaud sectors, as well as the former Pomerol town center. Château Rouget was acquired by the Labruyère family in 1992, who have have made major investments.
Rouget has 18 hectares of vines mainly located on the Pomerol plateau. Consisting of three specific parts, the replanted vineyard is now more heavily weighted with Merlot (85%), compared with 15% Cabernet Franc. Rouget's soil is primarily clay and gravel. However, there are also pockets of siliceous gravel. The subsoil contains a significant percentage of iron-rich hardpan typical of the finest wines of Pomerol. The average age of the vines in the most recently planted part of the vineyard is just 10 years. However, the oldest part has vines that are over 50, and the average age is 30 years.
Although the price of Château Rouget has been rising regularly for the past 15 years, it is still not very expensive in the context of Pomerol, and represents good value for money. The wine is aromatic, with plenty of body and a velvety texture.
