Château Suduiraut is located in the heart of Sauternes, in Preignac, one of the appellation's five communes. Count Blaise de Suduiraut renovated the estate in the 17th century after it had been devastated during the Fronde civil war.
Suduiraut has belonged to AXA Millésimes since 1992.
The 92 hectare vineyard represents the synthesis of clay soil typical of Sauternes (known to produce opulent wines) and gravelly soil, more reminiscent of Barsac (tending to provide acidity and balance).
The grapes are picked one by one in several waves over a period of several weeks. The fruit is pressed very slowly in a pneumatic winepress. The juice is then cold stabilized and fermented in barrel. Suduiraut is bottled after 18-24 months of barrel aging.
Since the beginning of this decade, chaptalization is no longer practiced at Suduiraut, who have made a huge effort to improve the quality of their wines: replanting with special attention to compatibility between grape varieties and soil type, green cover between the vine rows, lower yields (which now stand at just 10 hectoliters/hectare), and the introduction of biological pest control (no chemical sprays or pesticides).
Suiduiraut produces a beautiful, rich, fruity Sauternes with considerable aging potential in good years.
Since the turn of the century, Château Suduiraut has done a great deal at all stages of production to make the best possible wine.
The 2007, 2005, 2003, and 2001 vintages are altogether remarkable. 2006, 2004, and 2002 Suduiraut are also fine successes. With regard to older vintages 1990, 1989, and 1976 Suduiraut, as well as the mythical 1967 Suduiraut, are still very much demand in auction rooms.
If recent vintages are anything to go by, it would be safe to bet that Suduiraut will maintain and even improve quality in the future.
