Owned by the von Neipperg family of Canon la Gaffelière, Clos de l'Oratoire has a "cold" terroir due to its location on the north-eastern slope of Saint Emilion.
The terroir consists of clay-limestone soil with molasse at the top of the slope and clay-sand soil at the foot of the slope.
Respecting organic principles, the 10 hectare vineyard is carefully tended. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in new temperature-controlled wooden vats for 3-4 weeks. The cap is punched down gently prior to malolactic fermentation and aging on the lees in new oak barrels.
In good years, this estate produces full-bodied, round wines with great balance and delicious flavors.
Due to its north-easterly sun exposure, problems can sometimes arise in vintages when the grapes struggle to ripen fully. Clos de l'Oratoire gives its best in hot, sunny years (2000 or 2003).
Managed with the same rigor as the von Neipperg family's other estates, Clos de l'Oratoire is one of the best wines of Saint-Emilion.
After the interesting 96 and 97 vintages, the remarkable 2000 Clos de l'Oratoire set a new standard that subsequent vintages have not belied, despite their varying characteristics.
The meticulous care being taken in the vineyard and the cellar should mean that Clos de l'Oratoire could soon join the small circle of three-star wines.
