STUDIES ON BORDEAUX WINES AND GROWTHS

Clos Haut Peyraguey

Sauternes

1er Grand Cru Classé Sauternes

last update : Sunday 08 January 2012

The original Peyraguey estate was an 18th century barony, and Clos Haut Peyraguey came into being when it was split into two parts after Count de Duchâtel's death in 1879. The other part went on to become Lafaurie Peyraguey. The Clos Haut Peyraguey Groupement Familial Agricole (GFA) was managed by Jacques Pauly for many years starting in 1969. His daughter, Martine Langlais-Pauly, has been in charge of the estate since 2003.

The estate's terroir is altogether remarkable and part of the vineyard is virtually identical to that of the neighbouring Château d'Yquem.

The vines grow on top of a gravel-clay-sand rise, as well as on terraces of gravel and sandy sediment deposited by the Garonne and Ciron rivers during the Quartenary period.

Château Clos Haut Peyraguey has a microclimate that is very conducive to the development of noble rot.

The grapes are picked with the utmost care and each lot of barrels, corresponding to a different day's picking, is kept separate in order to make the finest possible final blend. This is done in vat as the wine finishes its alcoholic fermentation, which also has the advantage of providing strict temperature control. Once the wine has fermented, it goes back into barrel where it ages for at least 18 months. It is clarified prior to bottling.

Clos Haut Peyraguey's style is a subtle mix of finesse and richness. At blind tastings, it is sometimes confused with Château Climens thanks to its elegance.

In the Bottle

Clos Haut-Peyraguey is yet another relatively little-known estate that offers tremendous quality at a very reasonable price in certain years.

In great years, Clos Haut Peyraguey is every bit as good as its prestigious neighbors. Clos Haut-Peyraguey offers good consistency and an exceptional quality/price ratio.

Clos Haut-Peyraguey is definitely one to recommend!
