STUDIES ON BORDEAUX WINES AND GROWTHS

Carménère (or Carmenera)

Carménère (or Carmenera) is an ancient but relatively rarely encountered Bordeaux varietal. It was progressively abandoned because of poor health and frequent shattering. This grape-variety, which is fairly precocious in its development, is now used mostly for blends because it makes rich, dark-coloured, tannic and finely flavoured wines, presenting a welcome change from the typical Cabernet. Carménère is somewhat susceptible to Coulure, a vine condition that drastically reduces overall quality. Carménère has aromas and flavours of red fruits and fresh herbs.
