Legend :
Appellations Lalande de Pomerol
The wine area of Lalande-de-Pomerol is situated at the gates of the provincial town of Libourne, 30 kilometers East to Bordeaux. The Barbanne stream separates the district from Pomerol its famous Southern neighbour. Thanks to the geological specificities of its soil, Lalande de Pomerol has an excellent reputation amongst other Right Bank's appellations. The area of Lalande de Pomerol is protected on its South-West side by the hills of Fronsac. Therefore the district takes advantage of a particularly well adapted warm microclimate for growing quality vines. Lalande de Pomerol's soil, similarly to Pomerol, is marked by important iron oxide traces locally called "crasse de fer" as well as decalcified hardened and reddened quartz deposits, flint and granite. The ground has gravely and argillaceous characteristics but gets increasingly sandy towards the West side of the Lalande de Pomerol appellation.
About 200 local wine growers produce mostly red wines. The Merlot grape is predominantly used within the area. When yields are well managed, the young wines of Lalande-de-Pomerol often have a common touch of red fruit and spices. With age, they develop elegant and refined aromas of leather, smoke and ripe fruit.
This is a non exhaustive list.
The average production, exclusively in red, is of approx. 60,000 hl within a planted surface of 1,110 ha.
